Brent McMillian has been hired as the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs at Lipscomb University, as announced by Athletic Director Philip Hutcheson on July 12, 2018.
After a thorough search over 70 applicants and including interviews with the top six candidates, McMillian will be joining the Bison family.
"Out of a great list of quality candidates, Brent stood out as a perfect fit for our department,” Hutcheson said.
“His combination of experience in several key areas that we are interested in, his understanding of the opportunities within Athletics right now along with his plan to take advantage of them, his commitment to excellence in this profession and his desire to actively contribute to the mission of our university all added up to him being the right person. I'm eager for him to get started with us.”
The position is a new one within the department that was created to enhance Lipscomb Athletics in every area where the "program and the public" come together.
The Associate A.D. for External Affairs will have oversight of and responsibility for four key areas: revenue generation, marketing and promotions (including all athletics competitions and game-day activities), athletics communications, and brand management/creative services.
“The plan and vision for this approach is for us to be able to grow more financial support for our programs, to increase our fan support at competitions and in the community, to create a more distinctive brand that is more widely known and clearly understood throughout the country, and to tell our story in as many creative, compelling, and comprehensive ways as possible for the greatest exposure and impact that we can produce,” Hutcheson said.
McMillian has spent the last seven years at UT Chattanooga. Most recently, he served as the Assistant A.D for Development where he was both Director of the Mocs Club and also involved in major gift campaign work for men's basketball, volleyball, golf, women's soccer and football.
Under his watch, the athletic department at UTC has achieved the highest total number of donors in its history in each of the past three years. They have also broken records for total dollars raised.
Before his time as an associate A.D., McMillian was the Director of Ticketing at UTC where he directed a staff of 20 full-time and part-time team members. While leading this area, gross ticket sales increased by 55% over their previous all-time high, UTC recorded its first-ever $1,000,000 campaign and renewals for all sports stayed above 90%.
Prior to his time at UT Chattanooga, McMillian graduated with a degree in Sports Management from the University of Tennessee, worked with the Asheville Tourists minor league baseball team, and earned an MBA from Old Dominion.
"As we move forward, I also want to thank, in particular, Bridget Perine, Kirk Downs, Logan Butts, William Bush and Paul Nance for the work they've continued to do in marketing, promotions, communications, creative services and more,” Hutcheson said.
“For the past 10 months, they've not only done their jobs, but have often, willingly and cheerfully, taken on many more roles too in order to cover all of our bases. They all have gone above and beyond far longer and more often than should have been expected, and I appreciate and thank each of them for their part in Lipscomb Athletics' story this past year."
