The Bisons scored four runs in the first on Friday, April 28, but it was not enough in the Bisons 8-7 loss to Gardner-Webb.
Allen Bolden got the Bisons started with a leadoff double. Tadd Brewer followed with a bunt single putting runners on the corners with no outs. Ryan Mitchell recorded Lipscomb's third consecutive hit with a single up the middle, giving the Bisons a 1-0 lead. Nathan Sensing also had an RBI single in the inning. Caleb Joseph got the big hit of the inning, a two-out two-run single to left.
The Bulldogs scored a run in the second and three in the third to knot the game at four, before taking a 6-4 lead with two runs in the fifth.
However, the Bisons put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead. With two outs Mitchell single to right. Zac Miller followed with a single down the right field line advancing Mitchell to second. Sensing walked to load the bases. Ryan Price walked to force home a run and bring the Bisons to within one. The next batter, Joseph, drilled a single up the middle, driving in two runs, and giving the Bisons their second lead of the game.
"When we started losing we hung in there, and battled back to take the lead," starting pitcher Matt Schnelly said.
Right-hander Charles Williams relieved Schnelly with two runners on in the seventh. In six innings, Schnelly gave up six runs, four earned, on nine hits in the no-decision.
The Bulldogs got to Williams in the ninth, scoring two runs on two hits to take an 8-7 lead, which would be the final.
"We had great offensive performances," Schnelly said. "Bama went 3-3. Caleb hit well, and we never died down. We always stayed in the game and battled."
With his 3-3 performance, Mitchell extended his hit streak to nine games.
The Bisons finish out the series tomorrow, April 29, when they take on Gardner-Webb in a double-header starting at 1 p.m.
"We are hot now, so hopefully we can keep that going through the weekend, have the momentum carry us, and take steps towards locking up a playoff spot," Schnelly said.
