An impressive performance by Bisons' starter Matt Schnelly was not enough on Friday, February 23, as Lipscomb fell to Ball State 1-0.

Schnelly gave up a run in the first on two hits, but then settled down to throw six scoreless innings.

However, the Bisons could get nothing going against Cardinals starter, Brenden Stines, who threw 6.2 scoreless innings, striking out five.

After giving up the run in the first, Schnelly allowed just four more hits, while striking out a season high seven. Despite his remarkable pitching line, Schnelly received the loss to drop his record to 2-1. In 18 innings this season, he has given up just three earned runs while striking out 15. His ERA is an impressive 1.50.

Right-hander Charles Williams relieved Schnelly to start the eight and threw two scoreless innings of his own to close out the game.

The Bisons attempted to rally in the bottom of the ninth. Allen Bolden led off with a single up the middle, before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Casey Bond. Caleb Joseph followed with a single to center, putting runners on the corners. The next batter, Donnie Amos, hit what appeared to be a potential ground ball double play. After getting the force at second, interference was called on Joseph resulting in a double-play and preventing the tying run from scoring.

"It was unfortunate the way things turned out," Schnelly said. "We got our hits today, we just couldn't string anything together. There at the end, we thought we had it tied, but sometimes calls just don't go your way. We just have to come out ready to play tomorrow, and hope we go home with a win."

The Bisons are back in action when they take on Boston College at 1 p.m. Left-hander Rex Brothers is scheduled to take the mound for Lipscomb. In two starts this season, Brothers is 1-1 with a 5.62 ERA.
