In February of 2006, in just his second start as a Bison', Schnelly pitched a dominating three-hit shutout against a talented Pittsburg team. The performance was good enough to make Schnelly the first and up until now, only Lipscomb baseball player to receive the A-Sun honor.
Brothers, a freshman from Chapel Hill, Tennessee, became the first Lipscomb baseball player to be honored by the A-Sun this season.
After losing his first start of the season against Evansville, Brothers has rebounded winning six straight decisions. On Friday, he threw what could be the best game of his collegiate career to date, allowing just two runs, one earned in eight innings of work. He gave up just four hits while striking out eleven.
"Rex did a great job locating his fastball and getting ahead in the count," pitching coach, Lantz Wheeler said. "Rex is one of the hardest working pitchers and one of the most talented that I have ever had the chance to work with. He is a competitor and this will be the first of many awards that Rex will receive."
On the season, Brothers is 6-1 with a 3.53 ERA. In 51 innings he has given up 27 runs, 20 earned on 37 hits. He has struck out 55 and opponents are batting just .204 against him. He is leading the Bisons in wins, games started, strikeouts, and won-loss percentage (.857). He is second on the team in ERA, innings pitched, and opposing batting average.
"Rex is just learning how to pitch," Wheeler said. "He is really coming into his own and learning the value of changing speeds and locating three pitches for strikes."
With the season only half over, and Brothers still only a Freshman with several years and numerous starts left ahead of him, the Bisons are confident that Brothers' first Pitcher of the Week award will be but the first of many accomplishments and accolades, he will bring to the Lipscomb baseball program.
"Even as a freshman you can see the type of player he is going to be," Schnelly said. "By the time he graduates, I have little doubt, he may be the best Lipscomb pitcher we have all seen."
