After a two and half hour rain delay, and under a settling fog due to wildfires in the area, the Bisons defeated the Jacksonville Dolphins for the first time late Thursday night 10-2.
The Dolphins were first on the board in the bottom of the third as right fielder Mike McCallister reached on a fielder's choice. Dolphin third baseman Thomas LePage drove in McCallister on a single through the left side. The Dolphins then loaded the bases and shortstop Ben Kerr scored on a walk.
In the top of the sixth, the fog lifted over Sessions Stadium and the Bison bats caught fire. Centerfielder Casey Bond led off reaching first on a fielding error by the Dolphin second baseman. Catcher Caleb Joseph reached on a fielder's choice scoring Bond.
With one out in the inning the Bisons loaded the bases with Shane Simpkins, Andrew Nickerson, and Justin Sanders. With two outs in the inning, left fielder, Allen Bolden hit a three run double to the right field wall. Bolden would score on a bunt single by Ben Williams. Williams would score on a triple by centerfielder Casey Bond to complete the rotation. Casey Bond, Caleb Joseph, and Ryan Wilkins each added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.
Starting pitcher Robbie Smithson pitched five innings, only allowing two earned runs. Charles Williams pitched four innings of scoreless relief, only allowing two hits, to earn the save.
On his team's victory, Bison coach Jeff Forehand said, "After going down two runs, we stuck with it, and we had a big seven run inning. Allen [Bolden] really came through for us with a two outs bases loaded double for three runs... Charles [Williams] also came through for us pitching four scoreless innings. When we went down early, we didn't panic and we came through."
Game two of the three game series is set for tomorrow 5:30 p.m. CST.
