Pitcher John King and outfielder Casey Bond both are from Peachtree City, Ga. Both started their baseball careers at Birmingham-Southern. And both transferred to Lipscomb University for their senior seasons when Birmingham-Southern dropped out of NCAA Division I.
So it wasn't a surprise that both players were selected in the 2007 Major League Draft and that both are going to the San Francisco Giants. King, a right-handed pitcher, was chosen in the 17th round. Bond was picked in the 25th.
King was 0-3 for Lipscomb this season with a 5.79 earned run average. He made 13 appearances, including five starts. He also had one save. In 28 innings he gave up 34 hits, 29 runs (18 earned), walked 26 batters and struck out 14.
Bond played and started 58 games this season. He was second for the Bisons in hitting with a .326 average. He had 75 hits including nine doubles, a team-leading four triples and four home runs. His .452 slugging percentage is second best on the team. He drove in 25 runs.
As soon as they sign with the Giants they will be sent to Scottsdale, Ariz., for evaluations. They will play for either the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in Class A in Keizer, Ore., or the Arizona Giants Rookie League team in Scottsdale.
