The Bisons left Southern Miss without obtaining their first win of the season, but they did hold their own, in a game they did not lose until the bottom of the ninth on Sunday.
After losing the first two games of the series, the Bisons sent newcomer, left-hander Mike Dunn, to the mound on Sunday in search of their first win of the season.
The Bisons were trailing 3-0 after the first inning, but did not let it get them down, as they came back with four runs in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Blake Bratcher got the Bisons on the board with a three run homer. Ryan Wilkins followed with a solo home run to give Lipscomb the lead.
After Southern Miss tied the game in the fifth, the Bisons retook the lead in the sixth when Ben Williams scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-4.
It was a short lived lead however, as the Golden Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the inning, giving Southern Miss an 8-5 lead.
The game did not remain tied for long, as the Golden Eagles' pinch hitter, Keith Winstead drove in the winning run on an RBI single in the ninth.
For the second night in a row, the Bisons reached double digits in hits with ten. Gutierrez, Bratcher, Bolden, and Wilkins collected two hits each.
"We hit the ball pretty well," Bratcher said. "We just need to cut down on the strikeouts. We could have very easily come out with a win. We didn't and we just have to move on."
Dunn gave up five runs while striking out seven in 5.1 innings in the no decision. Reliever, Paul Piennette took the loss to drop his record to 0-1. In 2.2 innings of work he gave up just the one run while striking out two.
"We battled with the 30th ranked team in the country for three days," Bratcher said. "We could have easily come out with three wins. We are just going to learn from it, and keep playing hard. That's about all we can do."
The Bisons are back in action when they travel to Birmingham, AL, take on Samford University at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
