It may be spring break for most Lipscomb University students, but it has been business as usual for the Bisons baseball team.
Thursday night and Friday afternoon they will play host to Atlantic Sun foe Gardner-Webb at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium.
"It's spring break and if you aren't out of town playing you might as well be at home playing," said Bisons baseball coach Jeff Forehand. "Gardner-Webb beat Stetson two-out-of-three games last week."
Tuesday they stopped the University of Tennessee 6-4. Wednesday night they played they faced another Southeastern Conference foe when they visited Vanderbilt. The Commodores prevailed on damp, chilly night by a 12-4 score.
"We just wanted to put ourselves in the situation of playing good teams back-to-back," said Forehand. "At the end of the year if you play in the conference tournament you are going to have to be prepared to win several games in a row against good teams.
"Just putting ourselves into position to play these types of teams day-in and day-out is important. We will play Vandy twice this year. And we will go play UT in Knoxville the next two seasons. Maybe three years from now UT will come back."
The Bisons opened with two first inning runs against Vanderbilt. But Forehand pointed to one inning, a seven-run third for Vanderbilt, that turned the tide. But he was pleased with the result of the Tennessee game which was played in front of record crowd of 1,414 fans. It was also the first time the Bisons had beaten the Vols in baseball.
"The UT win was a good win," Forehand. "But it doesn't matter to me if it is an SEC team or whoever we play; we have to play our game. We have to continue to play well and keep preparing for what we are trying to do.
"UT was a good team. Vanderbilt was a good team. And Gardner-Webb is going to be a good team. We will have to bounce back from the Vanderbilt game and be ready to go. Playing these two games should prepare us for a tough weekend series."
Rex Brothers is scheduled to start the opening game of the Gardner-Webb series Thursday night.
