The Bisons nearly blew an eight run lead, but managed to hold off a late Skyhawks rally, as they defeated UT-Martin, 10-9 on Wednesday, April 9.
The Bisons got on the board first with three runs in the first. Caleb Joseph got the scoring going with an RBI single up the middle. Brad Gooch added to the Bisons lead with a sacrifice fly to right. Ryan Wilkins completed the inning's scoring with a ground rule double to right center.
The scoring continued for Lipscomb in the second on an RBI double by Jorge Gutierrez. Gutierrez came around to score on a balk later in the inning to increase the Bisons lead to 5-0.
Wilkins drove in his second RBI of the game in the third on a ground out to third.
Allen Bolden gave the Bisons an 8-0 lead in the fourth, drilling his fifth home run of the season, a two run shot, to right center.
The Skyhawks finally got on the board in the fifth, scoring four runs against the Bisons' starter, Matt Bowling. Bowling came out to pitch the sixth, but after allowing the first two runners to reach base, he was relieved by left-hander Paul Piennette. Both of the inherited runners scored against Piennette, completing Bowling's line for the night. In five innings, he gave up six runs, four earned, on seven hits.
The Bisons got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning, when Gooch scored on a fielding error by the Skyhawks third basemen.
UT-Martin pulled closer, scoring two runs in the sixth off of Piennette, to pull within 9-6. In two innings, Piennette gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits.
The Bisons scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Blake Bratcher.
However, the Skyhawks did not let up, scoring two runs in the seventh and another run in the eighth to give the Bisons a scare. However, reliever, Kyle Tognazzini escaped a bases loaded jam in the ninth to earn the save and give the Bisons the 10-9 win.
"Just like last time it looked early on like they were going to be flat the whole game and about half way through they put together a big inning on us," Bolden said. "In this game you have to play well early and play well late and unfortunately we didn't finish off and play well late offensively.
"We wanted to come back in with a little revenge in mind after losing to them last week and we didn't exactly beat them like we wanted to, but I think having to beat them in a tight situation like that will help in games like this weekend against Florida Gulf Coast and later on in the season."
Bowling earned the win to improve his record to 1-1.
"Bowling is a great pitcher with great stuff," Bolden said. "Unfortunately he has not had as many opportunities as he would have liked to have had this season. In his two outings he has come out and thrown strikes and challenged hitters and given us an opportunity to win the game. For him to not have thrown in three weeks, we could not have asked for a better outing."
With the win the Bisons improved to 18-14 on the season. They will be back in action when they take on Florida Gulf Coast on Friday, April 11.
