Lipscomb baseball fans will have an opportunity to celebrate the Philadelphia Phillies World Series Championship at this month's “Forehand and Friends” lunch Nov. 19.
Phillies pitcher Joe Blanton, who put his name in the World Series record books with a home run in game four against the Tampa Bay Rays, will be the guest speaker.
The lunch is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Hall of Fame Room in Allen Arena on the Lipscomb University campus. George Plaster, sports director for WGFX-FM (104.5 "The Zone"), will serve as the emcee. The cost for lunch is $5 per person. Guests are asked to RSVP by clicking here.
With two down in the fifth inning of game four Blanton hit a solo home run. It was the first time a Phillies pitcher had hit a home run in a World Series game. It was also the first time a pitcher had hit a home run in World Series game since Ken Holtzman in game four of the 1974 World Series.
It was the 15th home run by a pitcher in the history of the World Series. Both Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals and Bob McNally of the Baltimore Orioles hit two World Series home runs.
Blanton was acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the Oakland A’s on July 17. The Phillies gave up three players in the deal.
Blanton, a right-hander, was drafted by the A’s in the first round after acquiring the pick from the New York Yankees after leading the Southeastern Conference in strikeouts with 133 in 2002.
In three seasons with the A’s he was 12-12 (2005), 16-12 (2006) and 14-10 (2007). This season he was 9-12 for the Phillies with one World Series game win in game four.
The bat Blanton used in the game will be placed on display at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. as part of a World Series display.
Blanton, born in Nashville, played high school baseball at Franklin-Simpson in Franklin, Ky., and the played college baseball for the University of Kentucky.
The World Series flavor will continue at next month’s “Forehand and Friends’ lunch on Dec. 12 when outfielder Ben Zobrist of the American League Champion Tampa Bay Rays is the guest speaker.
