Tuesday, April 07, 2009The Lipscomb Bisons made a strong comeback in the final three innings, but fell short of the win in a 6-4 loss to Austin Peay Tuesday night in Clarksville, Tenn., at chilly Raymond C. Hand Park.
Austin Peay jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning and added two more in both third and fourth innings.
The Bisons scored two runs in the seventh inning. Branden Cadavid opened the inning with a bunt single to third. Ryan Wilkins walked. Logan Hostettler loaded the bases when he was safe at first as the pitcher. Jeremy Dobbs misplayed his sacrifice bunt attempt.
Channing Brown then doubled down the left line to drive in Cadavid and Wilkins. Dobbs retired the next two batters and then was relieved by Ryne Mantooth. He forced Tyler Wilson into a ground out to end the inning, leaving Brown at second and Hostettler stranded at third.
The double by Brown was his second hit of the season and his first extra base hit. He doubled his RBI total for the season.
The Bisons threatened again in the eighth inning. With one out Andrew Nickerson came in to pinch-hit for Tennyson Dodd and walked. Cadavid got his second hit of the game with a single up the middle. Both Nickerson and Cadavid advanced on a wild pitch. Wilkins walked to load the bases, but the Bisons couldn't get anyone across the plate.
In the ninth the Bisons added two more runs. After one out M.L. Williams reached base on a call of catcher's interference. Wilson singled to the right side of the field. Justin Sanders followed with a single to right field to score Williams. Nickerson brought in Wilson with the second run on a sacrifice fly to right field. Cadavid struck out swinging to end the game.
Freshman right-hander Martin Grude made his first start of the season and his eighth appearance. He gave up four runs, three earned, and four hits while striking out three and walking two in three innings. He was credited with the loss, his first of the season.
Davey Hackett, also a freshman right-hander, relieved and pitched five innings to complete the game. He allowed two hits and two runs, both earned. He walked two and struck out one.
The Bisons are 13-18. Austin Peay is 14-17.
This was the ninth in a string of 10 straight road games for the Bisons. They close out the road streak Wednesday night at 6 when they play the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
The Bisons are back home Friday and Saturday for a three-game series with Atlantic Sun foe North Florida. Friday night they play a single game at 6 at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. Saturday afternoon they close out the series with a doubleheader beginning at 1.
