SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Never able to get the offense on track, the Lipscomb baseball team dropped a 7-0 Atlantic Sun Conference decision to homestanding USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon at Harley Park in Spartanburg.
Upstate (15-3, 3-0 A-Sun) got on the board in the first inning by manufacturing a run after the Bison (7-13, 0-3 A-Sun) squandered a scoring chance in the top of the first. Junior right fielder Lee Wilson kicked off the contest with a single back up the middle before senior designated hitter Shawn Mehring dropped a perfect bunt between the mound and first base that no one could make a play on.
Senior left fielder M.L. Williams then dropped a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved both Wilson and Mehring up 90 feet. Senior second baseman Zak Messer then walked to load the bases for the Bison.
That set the table for junior centerfielder Zach Lowery, who hit a fly ball into foul territory in right. Upstate right fielder Tyler Miller made the grab and then fired home as Wilson tagged from third. Wilson dove into home with the throwing coming in and was called out to a chorus of disbelief from the Lipscomb faithful in attendance.
That would prove to be the closest Lipscomb would come to scoring on the afternoon as Brandon Lee (3-1) cruised on the hill en route to the complete-game shutout. Lipscomb southpaw Blake Forfara (1-3) took the loss lasting only two and two thirds innings allowing five hits and five earned runs while walking four and fanning one. Junior righty Tyler Burstrom was solid in relief for Lipscomb allowing two earned runs over four and one-thirds innings. Junior Davey Hackett worked the eighth allowing a hit.
The Bison stranded eight runners on the afternoon. Mehring and Sandoval led the Bison with two hits each while Messer went 1-for-2 at the dish with a pair of walks. Wilson’s leadoff hit to start the game extended his games reached base streak to 25 games.
The Bison return home to the friendly confines of Dugan Field on Tuesday night hosting Austin Peay for a non-conference tilt at 6 p.m.
