JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Looking to come away with a fourth-straight Atlantic Sun Conference series win, the Lipscomb baseball team dropped a 6-1 rubber game on Sunday afternoon to homestanding North Florida at Harmon Stadium in Jacksonville.
A day after blanked by UNF’s Kyle Westwood for nine innings, the Bisons (17-19, 9-6 A-Sun) ran into another North Florida (23-16, 6-9 A-Sun) buzz saw starter in Tyler Moore.
“We go 18 innings with one run, 22 strikeouts and they only walk us one time, I’ve got to tip my hat to their two guys on Saturday and Sunday,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “They pitched pretty well and we didn’t do enough offensively to press them enough on the mound.
“We take away a tough weekend but we faced two pretty good pitchers. Hopefully, we can learn from it and bounce back.”
Moore was perfect through five innings before junior second baseman Gray Hutchinson led off the sixth inning with an infield single behind the bag at second base after having an extended at bat due to a dropped foul ball by the UNF first baseman. Junior catcher Taylor Stewart followed with a four-pitch walk to move Hutchinson into scoring position.
Senior designated hitter Shawn Mehring then delivered a one-out single to right that allowed Hutchinson to score and ended Moore’s shutout bid but Stewart was gunned down trying to go from first to third on a solid throw from right field.
That would be the only score Moore would allow as the righty got out of the jam. Moore went nine innings allowing one unearned run and four hits. He notched 11 strikeouts and walked one.
Lipscomb junior righty Josh Cotham started the contest for the Bisons giving up three earned runs and five hits in five full innings of work.
The Bisons return home on Wednesday night hosting Western Kentucky in a non-conference tilt at 6 p.m. at Dugan Field.
