NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Getting behind early, the Lipscomb baseball team never recovered dropping an 8-2 Atlantic Sun Conference contest to Florida Gulf Coast at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium in Nashville.
The Eagles (19-27, 10-10 A-Sun) got things going right away using a pair of walks and a pair of hits to plate two runs off the Bisons (21-25, 10-10 A-Sun) in the top of the first. That would end the night for Lipscomb sophomore southpaw Blake Fonfara, who made the start despite being under the weather.
Junior lefty Chris Nunn would replace Fonfara to start the second inning and quickly got the first two batters of the inning out before FGCU’s Alex Diaz homered to make it a 3-0 lead for the Eagles. Nunn settled in after that and retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced before running into trouble in the sixth.
A two-out, seeing-eye single through the left side and a Lipscomb error got the rally started for the Eagles in the sixth and by the time the smoke cleared, FGCU had made it an 8-0 lead with a five-run frame ending Nunn’s night.
The Bisons finally ended Jason Forjet’s shutout bid in the seventh inning when senior first baseman Zak Messer ledoff the stanza with a solo blast over the left field wall to make it an 8-1 contest. Lipscomb added a run in the eighth to round out the scoring on a single through the left side by senior left fielder M.L. Williams bringing junior third baseman Gray Hutchinson across the dish.
Forjet got the win on the hill for FGCU throwing seven and one-third innings allowing two earned runs and five hits. The righty walked only one and struck out four. Fonfara took the loss for the Bisons giving up two earned runs on two hits and two walks in the first inning.
Along with Nunn’s work out of the bullpen, the Bisons got work from junior Davey Hackett and senior Ben Johnson.
The Bisons honored the 2012 senior class in a pregame ceremony at Dugan Field as the players were joined on the field by their friends and family.
Sunday’s rubber game is set for an 11:30 a.m. start at Dugan Field as the Bisons and Eagles conclude the A-Sun series.
