NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Stranding 14 runners on base including nine in scoring position, the Lipscomb baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision to Alabama A&M at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium in Nashville.
“Tonight was a clean game,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “Alabama A&M hit when they had to hit and we didn’t. When they had runners in scoring position, they drove them in.”
The Bisons (4-5) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as junior right fielder Drew Adams ledoff the game with a walk and then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt by the Bulldogs (2-8). That led to a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Taylor Stewart in the next at bat to give Lipscomb the 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs then made the Bisons pay for a leadoff walk in the fifth inning by manufacturing a run and tying the game at one.
A&M kept the offensive attack going in the sixth inning as the Bulldogs loaded the bases for Bradi Black, who would be the hero turning on a pitch and yanking it over the left field fence for the grand slam and a 5-1 lead. That would end junior Jacob Knott’s day on the hill as senior reliever Tyler Burstrom took over.
A two-out walk and a steal by the Bulldogs in the eighth would lead to a run against Burstrom when a single to right made it a 6-1 cushion for A&M.
Lipscomb finally got the offense going again in the eighth inning as sophomore designated hitter Tyson Ashcraft walked to leadoff the frame. Sophomore’s Noah Chandler and Joey Cecere each singled to load the bases for Adams, who was beaned to make it a 6-2 game.
Stewart then kept the rally going with a single to shortstop deep in the hole that scored Chandler from third. The Bisons then pulled to within two Cecere scored on a fielder’s choice by sophomore first baseman Griffin Moore.
Lipscomb threatened in the ninth inning getting a pair of runners aboard but Walton Ashwander moved to the mound from second base and got the final out of the game to earn the save.
Sanchez Tucker got the win for Alabama A&M in relief pitching four and one-thirds innings allowing three earned runs and seven hits. Tucker walked three and struck out three. Knott took the loss for Lipscomb giving up five earned runs and five hits in five and two-thirds innings of work. The righty also struck out five and walked three.
Lipscomb continues home action this weekend hosting Butler for a three-game set that begins on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
