HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – As the Lipscomb class of 2013 walked across the stage at Allen Arena to receive their diplomas back in Nashville, the baseball seniors came through in the clutch at the Bill Aker Complex at Friendship Field downing Atlantic Sun foe Northern Kentucky 3-2 in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon in Highland Heights.
With the game knotted at two in extras, senior right fielder Lee Wilson opened the 10th with a leadoff single and then cruised into second when the ball was mishandled by the Northern Kentucky (8-39, 3-17 A-Sun) centerfielder. A failed bunt attempt and a fly out to right found senior shortstop Aaron Sandoval digging in at the plate and the veteran delivered on a 2-1 pitch with a single back up the middle that plated Wilson easily to secure give the Bisons (17-30, 7-13 A-Sun) the lead.
“Today was just a great job by us coming back when we had to and scrapping together a run here and there when runs were tough to come by,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “Lee had the big hit to lead off the 10th and then Sandoval drove him in after we didn’t execute earlier in the game but we don’t want to dwell on that. “
Fellow senior Tyler Burstrom then headed back to the mound for his fifth inning of relief and promptly set the three Norse batters he faced down in order to collect his fourth win of the season. On the afternoon, Bustrom went five full innings allowing just two hits while fanning six NKU batters.
Northern Kentucky got on the scoreboard first in the contest as Logan Spurlin launched a deep fly over the left field fence to give the Norse a 1-0 lead in the second stanza.
That 1-0 lead held for NKU until the sixth inning when Lipscomb sophomore first baseman Tyson Ashcraft laced a two-out double into the right center gap that scored Sandoval. The Norse answered right back in the bottom of the frame however scoring on a wild pitch to retake the lead.
Sandoval would prove to be a difference maker in the eighth as well as the Albuquerque, N.M. native singled home fellow senior Taylor Stewart to tie the game 2-2 after the LU backstop led off the frame with a double.
NKU’s Matt Jefferson took the loss for the Norse going the distance for the home team. The southpaw allowed only one earned run in 10 innings of work and did not walk a batter.
Lipscomb freshman Denton Norman had another solid outing for the Bisons allowing the one home run and six hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The three-game series concludes on Sunday at 11 a.m. from the “Bluegrass State.”
