NASHVILLE, Tenn. –Adding some depth behind the plate, Lipscomb baseball head coach Jeff Forehand has signed junior college catcher Chucky Vazquez for the 2015 season.
“Chucky is a great addition to our school and to our team,” said Forehand. “He will be a solid player both offensively & defensively. Behind the plate he gives us a player with junior college experience that will make help him to make an immediate impact on our team. He has a great attitude and work ethic which will allow him to improve every day and we are excited to add him to our baseball family.”
A 40th round selection in the 2012 Major League Baseball amateur draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, Vazquez turned down an offer to play for the Brew Crew to head to Broward College in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The Plantation, Florida native capped off his 2-year stint with the Seahawks by earning first-team All-Southern Conference honors this past spring.
Named one of the top 200 junior college prospects in the country by Perfect Game, Vazquez hit .321 with five doubles, five home runs and 27 RBIs en route to the league honor. The backstop also gunned down 13 would-be base stealers in 2014. As a freshman in 2013, Vazquez hit .318 four doubles, one triple, two home runs and 27 RBIs in 28 games of action.
As a prepster at American High School, Vazquez helped lead the Patriots to the state finals in 2010 and earned first-team All-Miami Dade County by the Miami Herald and Sun Sentinel as a senior.
