BOCA RATOM, Fla. _ The Lipscomb Bisons baseball team split a doubleheader with Florida Atlantic Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Sun competition at FAU Stadium.
The Bisons pounded out 10 hits, including a home run by Ryan Mitchell, to take an 11-6 win in game one. FAU closed out the three-game series with a 7-4 win in game two.
Matt Schnelly and Charles Williams teamed on the mound for the Bisons. Schnelly started the game, pitching six innings. He allowed 12 hits and six runs, five earned, while walking one and striking out eight. Williams came on in relief, shutting down FAU for three innings. He gave up two hits, walked one and struck out five.
Schnelly raised his record to 4-5 with the win. Williams picked up his fourth save.
The Bisons started the scoring in game on in the third inning. Whit Reed doubled to right center to lead off. Ryan Price grounded out to the pitcher, moving Reed to third. Patrick O'Rourke grounded out to the shortstop. Allen Bolden reached by on catcher's interference. Tadd Brewer then singled through the right side scoring Reed. Mitchell singled up the middle, and went to second on an error by the second baseman. Brewer and Bolden both scored on the play. Nathan Sensing then singled up the middle scoring Mitchell.
In the fifth inning O'Rourke started things off when he went to first on an error by the shortstop. With two outs Mitchell singled through the left side of the field, scoring O'Rourke. Mitchell scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch.
The Bisons put five runs on the board in the seventh inning. With one out Mitchell slugged a solo home run to right field, his sixth of the season. Sensing walked. Jeff Baumgartner, pinch-hitting for Justin Sanders, walked. Preston Embrey entered the game to pinch run for Baumgartner. Embrey and Sensing then completed a double steal.
Zac Miller was intentionally walked. Reed singled down the right field line, scoring Embrey and Sensing. Price walked. O'Rourke hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Miller. Bolden singled through the right side scoring Reed.
Reed recorded his 10th double of the season. Mitchell had three hits and three RBI in five trips to the plate. Sensing and Reed each had two hits.
FAU scored one run in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth.
In game two the Bisons rallied in the sixth and ninth innings, but couldn't take the lead.
In the sixth Brewer led off with double to right center, his 11th of the year. Mitchell grounded out to second moving Brewer to third. Sensing hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Brewer.
In the ninth inning Sensing opened by reaching first base on an error by the third baseman. Caleb Joseph was safe on a fielder's choice. Sensing moved to second on a throwing error by the pitcher and then moved to third.
With one out Reed reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Sensing. With two outs David Becker singled to third base scoring Reed. O'Rourke, who had reached base on a single to right field, scored on a passed ball.
The Bisons had nine hits with Embrey getting two hits.
Josh Smith started on the mound for the Bisons. He pitched seven innings, giving up 10 hits and six runs, three earned. He walked two and struck out three. Smith slipped to 3-6 with the loss.
Ryan Carroll pitched one inning for the Bisons, scattering three hits and giving up one earned run.
The Bisons are 19-27 overall, 10-14 in the A-Sun. FAU is 24-23, 10-14 in the conference.
