Robert G. (Bob) Neil, a former member of the Lipscomb University athletics department as a player and a coach, passed away this morning.

Neil, 96, was present at the opening of all three basketball facilities at Lipscomb _ Burton Gym in 1924, McQuiddy Gym in 1948 and Allen Arena in 2001.

Neil played both baseball and basketball in the 1920s when the school was known as David Lipscomb College.

He graduated in 1929 and went to Harding College in Searcy, Ark. While at Harding, Neil was asked to return to Lipscomb to oversee the athletic department.

From 1934-37 he coached the Bisons basketball team. From 1933-42 he was the coach of the Bisons baseball team. He also found time to coach the Lipscomb tennis team.

Jonathan Seamon, long-time voice of Lipscomb athletics on the radio, recalled that Neil was the first official color analyst for baseball, in the early 1980s. According to Seamon, Neil loved to predict what a player was going to do at the plate.

In 1988 Neil was inducted into the Lipscomb Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also named a Lipscomb Legend. He started the Golden Circle at Lipscomb.

Visitation on Thursday will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home. Visitation on Friday will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Brentwood Hills Church of Christ.

The funeral is also Friday at 1 p.m. at Brentwood Hills Church of Christ.
