Smithson Dominating in Bisons 13-4 Win

For the third consecutive game, the Bisons displayed a strong pitching staff, in a 13-4 win against Chicago State on Friday, February 16.

The Bisons wasted no time getting on the board, scoring five runs in the first inning. Right-fielder Shane Simpkins got the big hit, a two run double to right center. He was 2-2 with four RBIs on the day.

Lipscomb struck for three more in the second, with Simpkins recording his second two RBI hit of the game.

The Bisons added another run on an RBI single by Branden Cadavid in the fifth to bring the score to 9-0.

The final four Bisons' runs crossed the plate in the sixth. Jared Picchiottino contributed an RBI single, and Cadavid added his second RBI of the game in the inning. Eric Abend also recorded an RBI with a groundout to third. The final run, scored on an error by the Couger's shortstop.

Rob Smithson, the Bisons' starter, was dominating, throwing six innings, while giving up just two hits and striking out ten. In ten innings this season, Smithson has given up no runs and just five hits. He has struck out 16 and opponents are batting .139 against him.

"Our team played well today," Smithson said. "It was good to see us go out there, put a lot of runs on the board early, and just keep scoring. The defense played well, we were able to get our bunts down, and get guys over. Overall we executed our game plan well."

Cadavid went 3-3 to lead the Bisons in hits, with Simpkis, Justin Sanders, and Ryan Wilkins each contributing two.

Smithson earned the win to bring his record to 1-0.

The Bisons are back in action tomorrow, when freshman right-hander Rex Brothers will take the mound against Chicago State. The game, previously scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. has been moved up to 12 p.m.
