After taking home the Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week award two weeks ago, left-hander Rex Brothers, relying primarily on his fastball was almost un-hittable as the Bisons defeated the Campbell Camels 2-1 on Friday, April 20.
Both Brothers, and Campbell' starter, Brandon Scott, looked strong from the start, exchanging zeroes in each of the first three innings.
The Bisons' offense finally broke through in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. After Ryan Wilkins reached on an error by the Camel's third basemen, Daniel Smith, Bond singled to left to put runners on first and third. After Bond stole second, Justin Sanders drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to give the Bisons' a 1-0 lead. Bond would score on an error by the Camel's second basemen to increase the lead to 2-0.
Brothers' did not allow a hit until Smith reached on an infield bunt single to lead off the fourth.
"It was a hit," Brothers said. "It was a great bunt, the same as a line drive; a base hit."
The Camels would finally break through for a run in the eighth, but it was all they would get against Brothers.
In eight innings, Brothers gave up one run on one hit, but walked five. He struck out eight, while lowering his ERA to 3.68. With the win, he improved to 7-1 on the season.
"I don't worry about how many hits, just the W," Brothers said. "We need to keep rolling. Like Coach Forehand says, `Keep the snowball rolling.'"
