In his first start since being named Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week, right-hander, Rob Smithson threw a complete game in the Bisons' series finale against Belmont, as the Bisons went on to win 9-2 on Sunday, April 29.

"He had the great Vandy start and we pushed him back so he would have a spot in the rotation," head coach Jeff Forehand said. "You can't ask more than him coming out with this complete game win."

After the Bruins took an early 1-0 first inning lead, the Bisons offense got to work in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs to claim a 3-0 lead.

Ben Williams reached on a bunt to lead off the inning, before advancing to second on a single to left by Caleb Joseph. The next batter, Ryan Wilkins, put the Bisons on the board with an RBI single through the left side. Casey Bond added an RBI bunt single for the second run, and Jared Picchiottino drove in Wilkins on a single through the right side to give the Bisons the 3-0 lead.

The Bruins pulled to within one with a run in the fourth, but the Bisons bats came back alive in the bottom of the inning, using an RBI fielder's choice and an error to plate two more runs, and increase their lead to 5-2.

The Bisons' added to their lead with four runs in the eighth to bring the score to 9-2. Wilkins and Bond scored on an error, while Andrew Nickerson and Allen Bolden added RBI doubles in the inning.

In the complete game effort, Smithson gave up two runs on nine hits while striking out eight. On the season, Smithson is 6-3 with a 3.68 ERA. Opponents are batting just .230 against him and he has struck out 63.

"It was big to get this third game win," Smithson said. "W couldn't afford to lose all three at home. It is real easy for you to pitch when the batters put up nine runs.

"Coach Wheeler did a great job calling pitches today. Our coaches have us going in the right direction."

With the win the Bisons improved to 26-20 with a 10-8 record in the Atlantic Sun. The Bisons will return to action when they travel to Kennesaw, GA, to take on Kennesaw State in a three game series on May 4-5.
