Rex Brothers and Taylor Merry provided Lipscomb with solid starting pitching but the offense could not capitalize as the Bisons' dropped a double-header to the Kennesaw State Owls by scores of 8-3 and 5-3 on Saturday, May 5.
In game one, the Bisons took their first lead of the series on an RBI single by Caleb Joseph in the third.
For the second day in a row, the Bisons' received a strong showing from their starting pitcher, this time from freshman left-hander, Rex Brothers. After the first batter he faced grounded out, Brothers proceeded to strike out the next seven.
However, after shutting out Kennesaw State through the first five innings, the Owls finally broke through against Brothers in the sixth. Back-to-back walks and a two-run double led to Brothers' departure.
He was relieved by Brandon McClurg with no outs and a runner on second in the sixth. In five plus innings, Brothers gave up three runs on five hits while striking out nine.
The Owls' offense got to McClurg in the sixth and seventh. In two innings, he gave up five runs on six hits.
Brothers received the loss to drop his record to 7-3.
In game two, each team's pitching held the opponent to only a single inning of scoring, but a Bisons' error in the fourth led to five runs, three of which were unearned, and a 5-0 Owls' lead.
The Bisons' attempted to rally in the eighth. With one out, Shane Simpkins singled to right. Joseph followed with a single to center, putting runners on first and second, for Ryan Wilkins who drove home the Bisons' first run of the game with a single to center. The next batter, Casey Bond, doubled to right enter, driving in two, to bring the score to 5-3.
Right-hander, Taylor Merry, received the loss to drop his record to 3-2. In five innings, he gave up five runs, two earned, on seven hits, while striking out five.
With the loss, the Bisons dropped to 26-23 on the season, 10-11 in the Atlantic Sun.
The Bisons' return home when they take on the Samford Bulldogs at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8.
