The Bisons may not have jump started their season with a win, but their effort was valiant in a 3-1 loss to Southern Miss on Friday.

Bisons' ace, sophomore, left-hander, Rex Brothers, took the mound for Lipscomb in their season opener. Brothers, last year's Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year, was solid, but allowed two runs in the first and a run in the second, giving the Golden Eagles a lead they would not relinquish.

The Bisons offense struggled early, and was further detoured by some outstanding Southern Miss defense. In the fourth, with a runner on, Ryan Wilkins drilled a ball to deep left that Southern Miss left fielder, Drew Carson, reached over the wall to grab for an out, denying the Bisons of a two run homer.

Lipscomb finally broke through with a run in the sixth, when Wilkins drove in Allen Bolden on a sacrifice fly to center.

The Bisons had only three hits in the game with Caleb Joseph, Blake Bratcher, and Shane Simpkins recording one each.

After allowing three runs in the first two innings, Brothers settled in, putting up zeros in each of his next three innings to finish out his night. In five innings, he gave up three earned runs on seven hits. Brothers was relieved by right-hander Chris Burnett to start the sixth. Burnett was impressive, allowing just three hits while striking out four in his three innings of work.

"Overall, it was a great team effort," Burnett said. "We were not able to record the win, but there were definitely a lot of positives from our first game today that we can walk away with.

"We had some opportunities, and some tough breaks. If one or two of those breaks had of gone our way we might have had a different ending. We just need to look at the positive, and come out here again tomorrow, play a good game, and hopefully walk away with a win."

Brothers received the loss to drop his record to 0-1. The Bisons will be back in action tomorrow when they face Southern Miss in game two of the three game weekend series, starting at 3 p.m.
