Bisons win series at Stetson with 11-9 victory

The Lipscomb Bisons baseball team left Florida Sunday with a 2-1 Atlantic Sun series win over Stetson.

Sunday afternoon the Bisons won the third game of the three-game series by a score of 11-9 at Melching Field in DeLand, Fla.

The Bisons led from the start jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Stetson answered with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Bisons came back with two more in the second.

After Stetson tied the game with three runs in bottom of the third, the Bisons again went back on the offensive attack with three runs in the third, one in the sixth and three in the eighth.

Stetson fought back in the bottom of the ninth with five runs, but fell short of a winning rally.

Shortstop Jorge Gutierrez led the Bisons 18-hit attack with four hits and three runs batted in six at bats.

Center fielder Allen Bolden and catcher Caleb Joseph each had three hits and one RBI for the Bisons.

Joseph, designated hitter Justin Sanders, right field Shane Simpkins and second baseman Ben Williams each had doubles in the game.

Bolden hit a solo home run to right field in the first inning to set the tone for the Bisons.

Mike Dunn started for the Bisons and pitched five innings. He gave up nine hits and four runs. He also struck out four. He earned the win raising his record to 3-1.

Josh Smith pitched 3 2/3 innings. He gave up eight hits and five runs, all earned. Chris Burnett pitched the final one-third of an inning to pick up his third save of the season.

Stetson used five pitchers in the game. Robbie Elsemiller, 1-2, started and pitched three innings. He gave up five runs, two earned and was credited with the loss.

Nick Bohn pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up two runs and three hits. Travis Stortz allowed seven hits and four runs. David Burns pitched a third of an inning and allowed only one hit. Andy Mauldin closed out the game with one inning. He gave up two hits.

The Bisons are 17-13 overall, 12-6 in the A-Sun. Stetson fell to 14-17 overall, 6-9 in the conference.
