Summer is the prime time for baseball and several current and former members of the Lipscomb Bisons baseball team are busy on diamonds around the country.
Pitcher Rex Brothers has started six games for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League, posting a 1-3 record. His last appearance was Wednesday night (July 16). Brothers, a junior left-hander, gave up six hits, three runs, one walk and struck out six in four innings. Falmouth edged the Brewster Whitecaps 7-6. Brothers did not get the decision.
For the season Brothers has pitched 24.1 innings, posted a 5.55 earned run average, walked 23 batters, scattered 27 hits and struck out 30.
Joseph ties team record: Former Lipscomb catcher Caleb Joseph had a record-tying night Wednesday (July 16) with a five-for-five performance against Jamestown in a New York-Penn League Class A game.
Joseph, batting second for the Aberdeen Ironbirds, opened the game with his first professional home run. He followed with a single, two doubles and another single, barely missing hitting for the cycle. His performance tied the Aberdeen team record for hits in a game.
He drove in four runs and scored twice. However, Aberdeen lost to Jamestown 8-6.
Tognazzini leads the league: Right-hander Kyle Tognazzini, who will be a= senior for the Bisons this season, is one of the hottest pitchers in the California Collegiate League.
Tognazzini is at the top of the league with a 0.00 earned run average. He has a 2-0 record in 15 appearances, allowing only six hits and striking out 26 in 19 innings.
Young in relief: Sophomore right-hander Jerry Young has a 1-2 worksheet with one save for the Morganton (N.C.) Aggies in the Southern Collegiate League.
Young has made eight appearances, throwing 10 innings. He has given up seven hits and six runs, walked 11 and struck out 16. His ERA is 5.40.
Gutierrez getting Royals treatment: Former Bisons shortstop Jorge Gutierrez is batting .261 for the Burlington Royals in Class A in North Carolina. He has 12 hits and six runs batted in 14 games.
Wednesday night in a 7-0 Appalachian League (Rookie) win over the Princeton Rays Gutierrez doubled for his first extra base hit of the year.
Gutierrez signed with the Kansas City Royals as a free agent this summer.McClurg riding the Big Train: Lipscomb right-hander Brandon McClurg is 1-2 this season for the Bethesda (Md.) Big Train in the Cal Ripken Senior Collegiate Baseball League. He has made five starts this season, posting a 5.24 earned run average.
