Bisons open baseball season at No. 12-ranked Georgia Tech

The Bisons baseball team opened the season with a 9-0 loss at No. 12-ranked Georgia Tech in Atlanta Friday afternoon.

It was the season opener for both teams. The three-game series continues today with senior right-hander Brandon McClurg starting for the Bisons at 1 p.m. at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Friday afternoon both teams were scoreless for four innings. Georgia Tech struck for three runs in the fifth inning. The big hit of the inning was a two-run home run to center field by Jeff Rowland.

In the sixth Georgia Tech added two more runs. Luke Murton tripled to center to drive in one run. Tony Plagman singled through the right side to drive in the fifth run of the game.

A grand slam by Derek Dietrich over the right field fence gave Georgia Tech a 9-0 lead.

Designated hitter Justin Sanders led the Bisons with two hits, including one double. Third baseman Ryan Wilkins had the only other hit for the Bisons.

Junior left-hander Rex Brothers started for the Bisons. He gave up five hits and five runs, but only two were earned. He struck out six and walked two in 5.2 innings.

Josh Cotham relieved Brothers. He pitched 1.1 inning, giving up four runs, all earned, and three hits. He struck out two and walked two. Davey Hackett closed out the game. He pitched one inning and did not allow a run or a hit. He struck out one batter and walked one.

Cotham and Hackett, both freshman right-handers, were making their collegiate debuts.

Georgia Tech collected eight hits.
