Monday, August 17, 2009 Former Lipscomb standout Rex Brothers has moved up to the Asheville Tourists of the South Atlantic League.
He made his debut with his new team Sunday, pitching the eighth inning in a 7-2 loss to Kannapolis. Brothers faced four batters and allowed one hit while striking out one. He did not give up a run.
Brothers, drafted 34th overall by the Colorado Rockies in the supplemental portion of the first round of the Major League First Year Player Draft, was 2-0 with a 3.38 for the Tri-City Dust Devils of the Northwest League, a Rookie-level team.
He pitched in eight games for the Dust Devils, all in relief. In 10.2 innings he struck out 18, scattered 10 hits, walked five and gave up four runs, all earned. Opponents were hitting .256 against him.
Area fans will have an opportunity to see Brothers play. Asheville will visit the Bowling Green Hot Rods Aug. 29 (7:05 p.m.), Aug. 30 (1:05 p.m.) and Aug. 31 (11:05 a.m.).
