Bisons rally but lose 5-4 at North Florida
The Lipscomb Bisons rallied for four runs the sixth inning to tie North Florida, but fell short 5-4 Friday night in the first game of a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series in Jacksonville, Fla.

Senior right-hander Josh Smith gave up all five runs on nine hits. He walked four and struck out 10. It was the sixth time in the last seven games that Smith has recorded double figures in strikeouts in a game dating back to March 26. He has 110 strikeouts this season, a new career high eclipsing his 101 last season.

Smith fell to 8-3 with the loss.

The Bisons continue the series Saturday at noon with a doubleheader at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. Sophomore right-hander Davey Hackett, 3-5, 6.18 earned run average, will start game one. Junior right-hander Mike Grace, 1-2, 7.20 ERA, is projected as the starter in game three. It will be his second start of the season.

Shortstop T.J. Hoelzer led the Bisons with two hits. He helped spark the four-run sixth inning with a two-RBI double to right center. Designated hitter Cory hale drove in the first run of the sixth with a double to left center.

Hale leads the Bisons with 12 doubles and 48 RBI.

North Florida’s Ospreys used three pitchers. Robbie Collier, who pitched 2.1 scoreless innings and gave up one hit, earned the win. Starter George Lott threw 5.1 innings and allowed four runs, three of them earned. He also gave up five hits. Casey Medlen closed out the game with a scoreless inning to earn his fourth save of the season.

North Florida batters connected for nine hits, all off of Smith. Right-hander Josh Cotham closed out the game of the Bisons. He did not give up a hit or a run.

The Bisons are 15-30, 6-12 in the A-Sun. North Florida is 25-20, 11-7 in the conference.
