Thursday, April 07, 2011The Lipscomb baseball team heads to Johnson City, Tenn., this weekend to face the ETSU Bucs (16-9, 8-5 A-Sun) at Cardinal Park. The Bisons (11-18, 3-6 A-Sun) have lost their last three outings after having led each contest.
Sophomore left-hander Blake Fonfara (1-0, 3.44 ERA) gets the Friday night starting nod for the second straight week. Game time is 6 p.m. central time.
Last week in a 4-2 victory against the Jacksonville Dolphins, Fonfara threw seven strong innings scattering four hits and two runs, both earned. He had excellent pitch control striking out five and walking one while needing just 82 pitches in his first career win.
“Blake is consistently throwing more strikes allowing him to be successful,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. “We knew he had to ability to pitch this well with his body frame and work ethic.”
Saturday the Bisons will send right-hander Connor Sinclair (2-4, 2.20 ERA) to the mound for a 1 p.m. first pitch. Neither team has announced their starting pitcher for Sunday’s game which is set for noon.
Cardinal Park is known for serving as host to high scoring affairs between a combination of a high altitude and strong winds.
“We feel like we are going to have to score some runs this weekend,” Forehand said. “The ballpark is conducive for an offensive team. We are going to have to execute and take advantage each situation.”
Seven of ETSU’s nine batters hit over .300 and the Bucs average over seven runs per game. Derek Trent leads ETSU with a .368 average and Bo Reeder has a team-high ten homers.
“We have pitched well enough to win the last three games,” Forehand said. “We need to be poised under the conditions and we need to continue to attack hitters.”
“We let the series get away from us last weekend. All series are big, but this is one we need to take to get back on the horse.”
