Memorial celebration to be held in Scott Shannon's honor

Nearly 20 years ago the Lipscomb family lost a dear member when All-American pitcher Scott Shannon lost his brief battle with cancer following his senior season with the Bisons.  On Saturday, Nov. 5, the Lipscomb Athletics Department is set to host an on-campus reception and memorial celebration to honor Shannon’s life.

"Lipscomb is proud to remember Scott Shannon, our friend and one of Bison Baseball's greatest student-athletes,” said Andy Lane, Associate Athletic Director for Development.  "While he was here a short number of years he left an incredible legacy and his story is one that we need to continue to share with our student-athletes today.  None of us know what tomorrow holds, but I will always remember the courage and positive attitude that Scott showed from the moment he found out he was sick.  Over the years we have seen a lot of great student-athletes, but Scott was one of the special ones that we will always remember and not forget the impact he made during his time at Lipscomb."

Held in the Paul Rogers Board Room in the Ezell Center, the reception begins at 3 p.m. as friends, classmates and teammates will gather to visit with the Shannon family and with one another.   A memorial celebration will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the Doris Swang Chapel on the second floor of the Ezell Center.

"Besides Scott's talents as a player and student he was such a wonderful person,” said Lane.  “We were all devastated when Scott was diagnosed with his sickness and so sad when he passed away.  Throughout his illness Scott showed the same determination and competitiveness he displayed as a player."

In addition to the celebration of Shannon’s life, the weekend also allows the Bisons to recognize the Scott Shannon Memorial Scholarship that was established in his honor.  This scholarship was created as a way to both ensure that the Lipscomb baseball program continues to attract and support student-athletes that embody the character that Shannon possessed and to serve as an annual reminder of the impact Scott had on our program here at Lipscomb.

Attendees are requested to RSVP with Sherry Phillips via email at or via phone at 615-966-5880.  Those that are unable to attend but that would still like to donate to Scott Shannon Memorial Service can give online at
