Bison to host San Diego for midweek series

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After four tough games in Starkville, Miss., last weekend, things do not get much easier this week for the Lipscomb baseball team as San Diego comes to town for two midweek games on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh stadium.

Tuesday’s contest is “Military Appreciation Day” for the Bison as all active and retired military will receive free admission along with one guest.  Lipscomb (4-8) will take the field donning new patriotic jerseys and caps for the special occasion.

“San Diego is a solid team,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “We jumped at the opportunity to play them at home.

“It’s a great opportunity and a very tall task getting to play to a good team which we’ve had the opportunity to do in several of our last games.”

It marks the first-ever meeting between Lipscomb and West Coast Conference member San Diego (9-3).  The Toreros head to the “Music City” having won 8-of-9 contests after dropping 2-of-3 to start the season at Sam Houston State. The team is hitting a blistering .346 and boasts a 2.95 ERA through the first dozen games.

The Bison are looking to rebound after being unable to leash Mississippi State and Connecticut in the four-game set over the weekend that saw Lipscomb drop a pair of contests to both teams in the round-robin event.

Senior southpaw Benjamin Johnson is slated to take the hill on Tuesday for the Bison.  Johnson is 0-1 with an 18.00 ERA in one inning of work.  The Torreros will counter with sophomore lefty Louie Lechic, who has also only worked one inning thus far this season with a 9.00 ERA.

Neither team has named a starter for Wednesday.

Following the game on Tuesday, Charlie Daniels and Gary Sinise are hosting a “Scholarship for Heroes” concert in Allen Arena to help raise funds for the Lipscomb Yellow Ribbon Program that provides tuition-free college education for post 9/11 veterans.  Also scheduled to perform are Darryl Worley, Chris Young and the Grascals.

Tuesday's game will be broadcast live on ASun.TV with Benjamin Seamon calling the play-by-play action and Taylor Jackson providing color analysis.
