NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Using a Luke Gearin penalty kick and an 18-yard strike from Tyler Burckhardt, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team took a 2-0 exhibition victory over the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Thursday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
“I think tonight was just good for the guys to just get out and get our first exhibition game under our belt,” said head coach Charles Morrow. “We got some of the jitters out and really sort of see us against another opponent with what we've been working on throughout the preseason.
“I think our final analysis of what we saw this evening, there were some bright spots but there is a lot of work we have to do going forward. Good result, although not result orientated not this time of year. I thought some definitely some bright spots but we got some work to do before we play Louisville on Monday.”
Lipscomb goalkeeper John Schnurbusch stopped all three balls that came his way in the second half, after the Bisons held the Chargers from attempting a shot on Miguel Hof in the first half. Both goalkeepers earned the combined shutout.
The Bisons took eight shots in the game placing five on goal. Chargers goalkeeper, Kel Markert, had three saves on the evening.
Gearin, a sophomore defender, opened the scoring with a penalty kick conversion in the 23rd minute to give LU the 1-0 advantage.
The Bisons had an opportunity in the 60th minute to get on the scoreboard again, as Burkhardt had a header go wide right of the goal.
However, in the 63rd minute, Burkhardt got his revenge. The senior midfielder received a pass and beat the last UAH defender, striking the ball out of the reach of Markert in the upper-left corner of the goal.
“Tyler was really going to goal one versus two and had two defenders to beat,” Morrow said. “He got behind the first one right away and he was one versus one to goal and did a great job beating the defender and obviously the finish was spectacular. I’m happy to see that from him, he is someone who has the ability to score goals.”
Burkhardt and Josue Chavez each had two shots for the Bisons as Gearin, Jeremy Reid, Robbie Johnson and Luke Salmen each had a shot as well.
“I think there is a lot of work to do,” Morrow said. “Tonight was a good starting point and gives us a platform to work from, from here.”
The Bisons travel to Louisville on Monday, Aug. 20, for their second and final exhibition match of the preseason. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. The regular season campaign begins with a road match-up with Evansville on Friday, Aug. 24.
