JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Unable to get the bats cranked up, the Lipscomb baseball team dropped an 8-0 Atlantic Sun Conference decision to homestanding ETSU on Friday night at Thomas Stadium in Johnson City.

The Bucs (19-12, 8-5 A-Sun) starter Kerry Doane controlled the game from start-to-finish scattering five hits in the complete-game shutout.  The righty struck out eight Bisons (12-23, 3-7 A-Sun) on the night and issued just one free pass.

“We didn’t have very many quality at bats against Doane,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “He was really good tonight but we didn’t do anything to help ourselves.  We got behind and he was pitching pretty good. I have to give him credit.”

ETSU wasted no time in getting on the score board with a two-run first but the damage could have been worse as Lipscomb senior starter Josh Cotham got out of a bases-loaded jam to end the frame.  The Bucs would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the third only one of which was earned after the inning was extended on a dropped fly ball.

The Bucs would go on to add a run in the fifth to take a 6-0 advantage before rounding out the scoring with a two-run seventh thanks to another defensive miscue for Lipscomb.

Cotham took the loss for the Bisons tossing four innings.  The veteran allowed eight hits and four earned runs while walking two and striking out a quartet of Bucs. Sophomore J. Hwang and senior Blake Fonfara both worked out of the bullpen for LU without giving up an earned run.

Sophomore first baseman Griffin Moore led Lipscomb at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort.

The A-Sun series continues on Saturday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. at Thomas Stadium.  The game is set to air live for free on http://www.ASun.TV
