13 hits lead Bisons past UT-Martin

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Pounding out 13 hits, the Lipscomb baseball team cruised past nonconference foe UT-Martin 12-3 on Tuesday night at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium in Nashville.

“Coming off a really good weekend series, I knew we had a little spirit about us and have been swinging the bats pretty good but tonight we got through the first couple of innings and then had the seven-run fourth that turned the game around,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “I’m proud of how we played and hope we can keep up the momentum.”

The Skyhawks (10-34) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with a two-out rally to take a 1-0 lead after the first frame.  The Bisons (19-30) quickly answered back in the bottom of the second when senior catcher Anthony Defelice ripped a single through the left side of the infield that scored sophomore first baseman Griffin Moore.

A two-run third inning put UT-Martin back in front 3-1 but that would be the final lead of the night for the visitors as the Bisons countered with a seven-run fourth to put the game out of reach.

A Moore single and a double to left by senior third baseman Gray Hutchinson got the inning started before the wheels came off for the Skyhawk defense.  A sacrifice bunt attempt by freshman second baseman Austin Sistrunk ended up scoring both More and Hutchinson.  Defelice then moved Sistrunk to third on a bunt that found both runners safe.

Senior designated hitter Lee Wilson then dropped down the third straight bunt.  This time, it went for an infield single as Sistrunk scored on the safety squeeze.  Junior right fielder Drew Adams followed with bunt number four of the inning and this one was fielded and launched into foul territory allowing Defelice to score.  The trend continued for senior shortstop Aaron Sandoval as the third error of the inning allowed him to reach and brought Adams and Wilson across the dish.

Sandoval would then score himself as junior left fielder Chad Shannon ripped a double to left to make it an 8-3 advantage for the Bisons.

Doubles by Sandoval and Hutchinson would pad the Lipscomb lead in the sixth inning as the Bisons scored a pair to make it a 10-3 advantage.  The Purple and Gold would then add a pair of insurance measures in the eighth on an RBI double by Shannon and a Hutchinson ground out to round out the scoring.

After receiving his diploma in a pregame ceremony, redshirt-junior Jacob Knott picked up the win on the hill tossing five innings.  The righty allowed three earned runs, three hits and three walks.

The Bisons hit the road this weekend for a key Atlantic Sun Conference series at Jacksonville beginning on Friday night.
