NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With a berth in next week’s Atlantic Sun Conference tournament on the line, the Lipscomb baseball team returns home on Thursday night to open a three-game conference set against Kennesaw State at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium.
The Bisons (21-32, 10-14 A-Sun) head into the series with the Owls (26-25, 13-11 A-Sun) in sole possession of seventh place in the conference standings ahead of Jacksonville and USC-Upstate, who are both 8-16 in league action. The top eight teams in the league earn postseason berths as the league has expanded the field from six teams to eight.
One win this weekend against Kennesaw State would clinch the No. 8 seed for Lipscomb while three wins against the Owls would mean a sixth-place finish for the Purple and Gold.
LU senior righty Josh Cotham is set to get the starting nod on Friday night going up against Kennesaw State’s Travis Dean. Cotham will take the hill for his 24th career start with a 3-5 record and a 7.27 ERA while Dean is 3-8 with a 4.84 ERA.
Friday night is set to be a special night as the Dugan Award will be presented in a pregame ceremony to one of the Lipscomb seniors as the highest laurel awarded in honor of the longtime Bison skipper Ken Dugan. LU freshman righty Denton Norman will get the starting nod for the Bisons against KSU’s Kevin Kyle. Norman is 2-1 on the season with a 3.06 ERA while Kyle is 6-6 with a 4.86 ERA.
Saturday afternoon will be another special contest as the Bisons take a moment before the game to honor the 12 Lipscomb seniors. Redshirt sophomore Will Blalock is set to start the final home game of 2013 against Kennesaw State’s Will Solomon. Blalock enters the contest 2-4 with a 5.70 ERA while Solomon is 2-3 with a 4.43 ERA for the Owls.
Fans are advised that parking could be difficult for Saturday’s game due to high school graduations going on inside Allen Arena directly adjacent to Dugan Field.
