Costly inning eliminates Bisons from A-Sun tourney

DELAND, Fla. – Unable to execute in a handful of key situations, the Lipscomb baseball team was eliminated from the 2013 Atlantic Sun Championship by No. 7 seed Kennesaw State 4-2 on Saturday morning at Melching Field in DeLand, Fla.

“We got the tying run on first and the winning run at the plate, it’s just unfortunate that it didn’t drop for us today,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “We can’t make any excuses though, Kennesaw just beat us today.  They did what they had to do, when they had to do it.”

The Bisons (25-34) were quick to get on the scoreboard in the contest plating a pair of runs off Kennesaw (28-29) starter Kevin Kyle.  Senior right fielder Lee Wilson was hit by an 0-2 pitch before fellow senior Taylor Stewart hit a chopper to third for the first hit of the game.   A wild pitch by Kyle moved both runners up 90 feet and the duo would come across the plate when sophomore first baseman Tyson Ashcraft laced a single to right field for the 2-0 lead.

The 2-0 lead held until the seventh inning when the Owls mounted a comeback ended Will Blalock’s day on the mound for the Bisons.  A leadoff single got things started and then a routine 6-4-3 double play ball looked to have the bases cleared but KSU’s Max Pentecost was ruled safe at first base.   Three straight Owl hits would then tie the game as senior reliever Jordan Zelhart took the mound in relief of Blalock.

Zelhart would only face one batter issuing a walk before fellow senior Blake Fonfara came in and hit the only batter he faced giving Kennesaw State their first lead of the afternoon as Peyton Hart strolled across the plate.  Senior Tyler Burstrom, who was perfect in relief on Friday, got an easy come backer straight to the mound but made a wide throw of the plate to give the Owls a two-run cushion.

The Bisons would threaten to answer in the bottom of the stanza as senior centerfielder Zach Lowery and senior third baseman Gray Hutchinson drew back-to-back walks ending Kyle’s day on the hill. A failed sacrifice bunt attempt along with a fly out and ground out ended the threat for Lipscomb as Kevin McCoy doused the fire.

Lipscomb threatened again in the ninth as Lowery delivered a one out single and sophomore pinch hitter Griffin Moore drew a two-out walk but McCoy was able to get out of the jam to earn the save.

Blalock took the loss for Lipscomb tossing 6.1 innings.  The redshirt sophomore gave up three earned runs and five hits along with three walks.

Kyle picked up the win tossing six full innings.  The southpaw gave up two earned runs, six hits and a walk while fanning five.

The loss ends the careers for 11 Lipscomb seniors, Tyler Burstrom, Josh Cotham, Anthony DiFelice, Blake Fonfara, Davey Hackett, Gray Hutchinson, Zach Lowery, Aaron Sandoval, Taylor Stewart, Lee Wilson, and Jordan Zelhart.
