NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Fresh off the heels of being named the 2013 National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Defensive Player of the Year, Mike Korte has signed a National Letter of Intent to Lipscomb baseball for the 2014 season as announced by head coach Jeff Forehand on Monday.
The Malabar, Fla., native was nearly flawless in the field in 2013 making just five errors in 184 attempts for a .973 fielding percentage. Korte notched 83 putouts, 96 assists and turned 10 double plays as a sophomore at Indian River State Community College in Ft. Pierce, Fla.
“Mike is a great fit for our school and our baseball program,” said Forehand. “He will be an immediate impact player for us as a lockdown defender up the middle that also has the ability to set the table on offense. He brings great knowledge of the game and a work ethic that will be second-to-none.”
Along with defensive player of the year honors, Korte also garnered an American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NJCAA Gold Glove Award. The left-handed hitting Korte hit .287 with 23 RBIs, four doubles, 13 runs scored and put the ball in play fanning only 10 times in 146 plate appearances.
