Former Bison Brothers named 2013 Unsung Award winner

SUNNYVALE, Ca. – Former Lipscomb pitcher Rex Brothers has been named “Mr. Unsung 2013” by Yahoo Sports topping a list of 31 candidates in Major League Baseball.

The southpaw has been stellar in his third season with the Colorado Rockies posting a 1.83 ERA in 69 appearances on the hill. Brothers has spent time as both a setup man and closer in 2013 notching 17 saves.

“To the people that know Rex, he’s not unsung,” said Lipscomb baseball head coach Jeff Forehand. “But for the fans of Major League Baseball he would be.  He’s begun to make his presence known this year and it’s only going to get better from here.

“The general managers and people across baseball that face him know what they are up against and that’s a pretty good player.”

Brothers has been particularly effective against lefties this season having given up just one run to left-handed hitters and holding them to a .171 average at the dish.

Yahoo offered up the following as their formula to coming up with their ranking:

“Five variables went into a formula: Google hits of a player's name, tweets about him over the last month as tracked by Topsy and newspaper-and-wire articles that include him on LexisNexis helped establish his popularity, and both FanGraphs' and's metrics for Wins Above Replacement allow us to measure the media numbers against the best uniform number for productivity available.”

A first-round draft pick by the Rockies in 2009, Brothers was a standout for Lispcomb on the mound from earning a pair of All-Atlantic Sun Conference team honors as a Bison.  He is also holds the school records hold with 322 career strikeouts.
