Baseball hits the road for A-Sun series at Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Lipscomb baseball team hits the road for its second consecutive road trip in Atlantic Sun Conference action this weekend when the Bisons take on USC Upstate in a three-game set at Cleveland S. Harley Park.

The first game is set for 5 p.m. CT on Friday.

Lipscomb enters the weekend at 16-10 overall and 5-1 in A-Sun play after sweeping the series at Kennesaw State last weekend.  After losing six straight, Upstate will bring a 9-17 overall and 1-5 A-Sun record into the set.

Around the horn:

  • The Bisons head into Friday night’s contest with the Spartans trailing in the all-time series 7-8. Upstate took two of three last season at Ken Dugan Field. The Spartans hold a 5-1 advantage over Lipscomb on its home turf.
  •  Big innings have been a large part of the success for the team in 2014 so far. Five times this season the Bisons have posted seven or more runs in a frame.  Lipscomb has also scored four or more runs in an inning 15 times so far.
  • The Bisons sit atop the Atlantic Sun Conference rankings in on-base percentage (.400), runs scored (201), doubles (54), triples (12) total bases (375) and walks (148).  Lipscomb also leads the league in double plays having turned 27 pitcher’s best friends.  On the mound, Lipscomb ranks second in the league in opposing batting average (.241) and in runners picked off (6).
  • A number of players rank among the league leaders including junior shortstop Grant Massey who leads the league in walks (24), tied for the lead in runs scored (27), ranks third in doubles (9) and eighth in on-base percentage (.427).  Junior second baseman Mike Korte ranks third in the A-Sun in on-base percentage (.448) and walks (22) and ranks third in runs scored (24).  Senior outfielder Drew Adams leads the league in RBIs (29), ranks tied for second in triples (3), and third in walks (20).   
  • After a February that saw the Bisons go 2-8, Lipscomb has gone 14-2 in the month of March.  As a team, the Purple and Gold are hitting .302, fielding .969 and have posted a 3.50 ERA.  The Bisons have outscored opponents 137-66.  Senior outfielder Drew Adams has been a big part of the surge hitting .359 with 24 RBIs in March. 
  • The Bisons rolled off a 10-game win streak that was snapped March 15 against Jacksonville.  The streak is the longest in school history in the NCAA Division I era topping the previous record of seven set in 2007.
  • Having drawn 148 free passes on the season, the Bisons ranked second nationally coming into the week trailing only Tennessee Tech (150) and ranking ahead of Florida State (141).  Junior shortstop Grant Massey ranks fourth nationally with 24 just ahead of junior second baseman Mike Korte, who ranks tied for fifth in the nation with 22.  
  • With 54 doubles on the season, the Bisons entered the week tied for 10th in the nation with Georgia State. 
  • Lipscomb also ranked in the top10 nationally in runs scored with 196 coming across the dish, sixth most in Division I.
  • Lipscomb’s 12 triples are tied for fifth in the nation coming into the week along with Canisius, James Madison, Nebraska and Kansas.
  • The Bisons have turned 27 pitcher’s best friends so far in 2014, ranking in the top 10 nationally coming into the week.
