NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Bolstered by the second complete-game performance in two days, the Lipscomb baseball team rode sophomore pitcher Denton Norman to a 6-3 win over Atlantic Sun Conference foe ETSU that finished off a 3-game sweep of the Buccanneers at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Norman followed Hunter Brothers’ complete-game shutout on Saturday with a gem of his own. The righty scattered seven hits and three earned runs for his first complete game of his career. Norman struck out seven without allowing a walk
“When you get that complete game, you know the starter is in control,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “We felt like Denton was today. There were a couple of times we thought about getting the bullpen hot but he got himself out of some jams.
“I’m just proud of him especially on the heels of what Hunter did yesterday. He put us in a great position to win the game.”
The Bisons (21-12, 10-2) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with a 3-run bottom of the first to take the early lead. Junior shortstop Grant Massey continued his hot hitting with a one-out double to get things going before coming home to score on an RBI single through the left side by sophomore third baseman Austin Sistrunk.
A single to left field by junior left fielder Josh Lee put two aboard for the Purple and Gold and junior designated hitter Tyson Ashcraft went the other way to place a looper just inside the right field line for a two-run triple giving Lipscomb a 3-0 lead.
The Bucs (14-17, 4-5 A-Sun) would answer right back with a pair of runs in the top of the second to make it a one-run lead before the Bisons answered back with a pair in third to regain the 3-run cushion. Senior right fielder Drew Adams kicked things off with a one-out single to right field before Sistrunk collected his second base hit of the afternoon giving Lipscomb runners on the corners.
That set the table for Josh Lee and he singled to right to score and move Sistrunk 90 feet from home. Ashcraft followed with a fly ball into center field that was deep enough to plate Sistrunk and give the Bisons a 5-2 lead.
ETSU would tighten the game up again with a run in the fifth off Norman but that’s as close as the Bucs would come.
Adams would round out the scoring in the eighth with a solo blast just to the left of the 375 sign in left field to give the Bisons an insurance tally.
“Anytime when you score late when you’ve got a lead to give you that extra cushion is great,” said Forehand. “It was a good at bat for him. He stayed back on the pitch and squared it up pretty good. I thought all weekend we had good at bats.”
Hitters two through four in the order posted 2-for-4 afternoon’s at the dish to help lead Lipscomb past ETSU and sweep the final A-Sun series between the two schools as the Bucanneers depart for the Southern Conference next season.
The Bisons step out of conference play on Tuesday night with a trek to UT-Martin to take on the Skyhawks. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
