Xavier visits Music City for weekend baseball series

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb baseball team will look to defend its home turf this weekend when Xavier visits Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium for a three-game nonconference series. Friday’s first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.

The Bisons (11-6) are coming off a disappointing 6-1 midweek defeat at Western Kentucky on Tuesday. Western Kentucky jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning and was never really threatened by Lipscomb throughout the next eight innings.

The Purple and Gold will be glad to be back at home where they are 10-1 this season and have swept all three weekend series.

Senior Ian Martinez-McGraw anchors the weekend rotation in the Friday night slot where he is 3-1 with a league-leading 0.58 ERA. He has allowed just two earned runs in 31 innings pitched and gave up his first extra-base hit last weekend against Quinnipiac.

Freshman Michael Gigliotti is riding a team-leading 11-game hitting streak and leads the team with a .391 average and 25 hits at the plate. Senior left fielder Jonathan Allison leads the team in runs driven in with 17. He recorded nine in four games last week.

Redshirt junior Adam Lee has provided the power for the Bisons this season with three home runs, including two last week. He did not hit a single home run in 2014.

Scouting Xavier:

Entering 2015 Xavier was selected to finish fourth in the Big East Conference by the league’s coaches. It returns 23 letterwinners, including a preseason all-conference duo in catcher Daniel Rizzie and pitcher Eric Stiene.

The Musketeers (6-14) snapped a 10-game losing streak earlier this week with a pair of midweek wins over Miami (OH.)

Rizzie leads Xavier with a .275 batting average and has recorded 14 hits and five runs in 14 games played.

As a team the Musketeers have just four home runs by four different players.  Andre Jernigan leads a trio of players with double-digit RBI. Jernigan has 12, while Brian Bruening and Joe Forney have 11 and 10 respectively.

Xavier is hitting just .222 and will bring a .477 team ERA into the weekend.
