NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With the 2016 season still three days from the first pitch, the Lipscomb baseball program is already making national headlines.
On Monday, D1Baseball.com released its Top 100 Freshman Prospects and the list ranked Lipscomb’s Von Watson at No. 86.
Although the Potts Camp, Mississippi native has yet to see any official action for the Bisons, he is expected to make an immediate impact this season as an outfielder and a designated hitter.
Watson, 6-foot-2, enrolled at Lipscomb by way of Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis where he smashed 13 home runs to finish as the nation’s second-leading home run hitter as a senior.
His talents earned him a 29th-round selection in the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.
PerfectGame.org ranked Watson the 29th best outfielder and the 130th best overall player in the nation coming out of prep school after earning All-Metro and All-District honors in 2015.
D1Baseball’s Top 100 Freshman list also took into consideration players who would be eligible for the 2016 and 2017 drafts. It not only considered each player’s 2016 impact, but relied more heavily on the long-term potential for the listed players as future draft prospects.
Watson was the only Atlantic Sun Conference member to make the list. On Friday, Feb. 12, D1Baseball tabbed Watson as the preseason freshman of the year in the A-Sun, vaulting him atop the league’s impact freshman list.
The organization picked the Bisons to finish third in its conference preseason projected standings.
Lipscomb will take Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium Friday at 4 p.m. for its 2016 Opening Day. The Purple and Gold will play host to Eastern Kentucky for a three-game set.
