Baseball Opens Season Friday against Eastern Kentucky

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb baseball team begins its 10th season under the helm of head coach Jeff Forehand this weekend when the Bisons play host to Eastern Kentucky in a three-game set beginning with Friday’s first pitch at 4 p.m. inside Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium.

Forehand enters the year just five wins shy of picking up win No. 250 at the helm of the storied Bisons program.

The Purple and Gold will look to build off a banner year in 2015 that saw them finish 39-20 overall with an Atlantic Sun Tournament Championship and its second NCAA Tournament berth in program history.

Lipscomb returns three of its top five hitters from 2015 in sophomore outfielder Michael Gigliotti (.336), redshirt senior first basemen Adam Lee (.298) and redshirt sophomore outfielder Allan Hooker (.296). The trio combined for 93 RBI and 48 extra base hits while drawing 70 walks.

The Bisons will need to replace production from two of their top hitters in 2015, Grant Massey and Jonathan Allison.

Senior Chucky Vazquez returns behind the plate for Lipscomb after knocking in 20 RBI, stealing seven bases and drawing 11 walks in his junior year.

Lipscomb had five players named to the 2015 All-Conference Second Team, most in the conference, and have three of those players returning as well as all three members of the team that were named to the 2015 All-Freshmen Team, also a conference-high.

The Bisons will look to a pair of sophomores to fill the void left by their 2015 ace Ian Martinez-McGraw. Sophomores Brady Puckett and Jeffrey Passantino both earned 2015 All-Freshmen honors after combining for 12 wins and 146.1 innings pitched while allowing only 60 earned runs.

Lipscomb’s pitching staff gave up only 499 hits in 2015, lowest in the conference, while allowing just 221 earned runs, tied for lowest in the conference. Nine of the 14 members of that staff are returning in 2016.

Quick Hitters:

  • Lipscomb and EKU have met just twice on the diamond with each team winning one. In 2001 EKU downed the Bisons 6-1 before Lipscomb came back to take the meeting in 2002, 17-9. Both games were in Richmond, Kentucky.
  • After sitting out all off of 2015 after transferring from LSU, redshirt senior Cody Glenn will make his much anticipated Lipscomb debut Friday. In three seasons with the Tigers, the southpaw compiled a 9-4 career record with a 3.73 ERA in 132.2 innings. He struck out 72 and walked 32.
  • The Bisons bring back 25 letter winners off of last year’s squad. There will also be 12 newcomers who will look to make their debut against the Colonels.
  • Last season the Bisons won their second A-Sun Tournament title after going 4-0 in Fort Myers, Florida. It marked the second straight season and the fourth time in program history the Purple and Gold reached the conference final.
  • Sophomores Michael Gigliotti and Brady Puckett were each named to the A-Sun Preseason All-Conference team. Puckett was also the fan-voted A-Sun Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
  • Sophomore hurler Jeffrey Passantino, along with Gigliotti, was named Preseason All-Conference by PerfectGame.
  • Gigliotti and Passantino were each named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American last season.
  • The Bisons were picked to finish third in the A-Sun coaches poll behind North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast. Last season Lipscomb finished second in the league with a 13-8 mark.
  • The season opener will mark the seventh straight season and the 11th time in the last 13 seasons the Purple and Gold have opened its season at Dugan Field.
