NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb baseball’s Michael Gigliotti continues to build on his preseason resume after being named to USA Baseball’s Preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List on Wednesday.
Gigliotti’s Golden Spikes Watch List honor accompanies three preseason All-America nods, led by a First Team selection from Baseball America, along with ASUN Conference Preseason Player and Defensive Player of the Year honors, voted on by the league’s head coaches.
The prestigious watch list features 55 of the nation’s top amateur players, from high school and college baseball. The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will maintain a rolling list of players, allowing athletes to play themselves into consideration for the award throughout the season.
The 40th Golden Spikes Award will be presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation on June 29 in Los Angeles.
USA Baseball has partnered with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation to host the Golden Spikes Award since 2013. The Foundation was formed to honor legendary USC and USA Baseball Olympic team coach, Rod Dedeaux, and supports youth baseball and softball programs in underserved communities throughout Southern California.
Gigliotti is the only ASUN player named to the list and just one of three from the state of Tennessee, joining Jeren Kendall and Kyle Wright of Vanderbilt.
Tabbed the Robert A. McNeece Award winner for the top pro prospect in the Cape Cod League this past summer, Gigliotti batted .326 for the Falmouth Commodores with a league-leading 41 runs and 27 walks to earn a 2016 All-Star bid as the starting center fielder for the West.
Helping Falmouth reach its first-ever Cape League Championship Series, Gigliotti racked up 62 hits, 10 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 24 RBI. In eight playoff games he batted .438 with 14 hits, 10 runs and six runs driven in.
As a sophomore Bison in 2016, the Fort Lauderdale, Florida native earned All-ASUN second team honors for the second straight season after collecting a conference-leading five triples to go along with his .302 batting clip and a .407 on-base percentage. Gigliotti also added 24 RBI, 31 walks and 15 stolen bases.
In 2014, Gigliotti earned Freshman All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association as well as an ASUN All-Freshman nod after hitting .336 with 78 hits, 51 runs scored, 25 walks and 17 stolen bases during his debut season in the Music City.
Entering his junior season in 2017, Gigliotti owns a .321 average with 136 hits, 106 runs scored, 17 doubles, eight triples, eight home runs, 52 RBI, 56 walks and 32 stolen bases in 109 career games.
