Watson goes yard to clinch series for Team Black

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In Lipscomb baseball’s second scrimmage of the week at Ken Dugan Field on Thursday, it was Team Black who pulled out a comeback victory to take down Purple 3-2 and clinch the Purple and Gold World Series.

For the second day in a row it was outfielder Von Watson who proved the hero for Black. The Potts Camp, Mississippi native brought an 0-for-2 line into the box with his team trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth. The junior stepped up and blasted a 2-run dinger off the scoreboard in right center for the eventual game-winning tallies. Zeke Dodson scored on the hit after drawing a leadoff walk to open the frame.

Just like it had in game one, Black wasted little time in grabbing the lead. Senior shortstop Blake Thomas kicked off the bottom of the first with a ripped double down the line in left and then swiped third base two batters later to stand 90 feet from home. Senior catcher Jeffrey Crisan knocked home Thomas on a single through the left side to put Black on top.

Team Purple responded in the top of the second with a Jake Perry single and a free pass from Chris Bashlor to open things up. Two batters later, Coleman Goodwin lined a single into left field to bring home Perry and knot things at 1-1. Bashlor was thrown out at the plate by Watson.

In the top of the fourth, Tevin Symonette and Bashlor both reached via singles. With two outs, Jackson Furstace looped a pitch deep enough into left center for the run to score from second and to give Purple its first lead of the series at 2-1.

Max Habegger got the nod for Team Black on the mound. The freshman southpaw tossed 3.0 innings and gave up four hits, three walks and three strikeouts, but was able to limit the damage to just one run allowed. He helped his cause by getting out of a bases loaded jam in the second with a pop fly to second.

JUCO transfer Joshua Colon worked 5.0 frames for Black. He struck out four and gave up three runs on six hits.

  • Thomas was 2-for-4 with a double, a bunt single, a run and a stolen base.
  • Crisan finished 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a stolen base.
  • Lee Solomon went 1-for-3.
  • Goodwin was 2-for-3 with an RBI single.
  • Nicko Ortega tossed the final 3.0 innings for Black, allowing just one hit – Watson’s homer, with two walks and two punch outs.
  • Erik Gutierrez went 2.0 frames with two hits, two strikeouts and one walk.
  • The Bisons are back for the series finale at 3 p.m. on Friday.
