Baseball hosts NJIT to open ASUN action

NASHVILLE – ASUN Conference play is finally here for the Lipscomb baseball team as the Bisons get set to host NJIT for three games at Ken Dugan Field this weekend.

With the series falling on Easter weekend, the opener is scheduled to get under way at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Game two will be at 4 p.m. on Friday before an 11 a.m. first pitch for the Saturday finale. However, with rain expected to reach 1-2 inches, the weekend schedule could change. Stayed tuned into LipscombSports.com and @BisonBaseball on twitter for up-to-date information.

Games two and three are slated to air on ESPN3 with Justin and Benjamin Seamon on the call. Live stats will be provided for all three matchups.

The Bisons (11-13) are coming off of their biggest win of the season with a 5-1 victory over No. 8 Vanderbilt Tuesday night at First Tennessee Park.

Four pitchers combined to throw a one-hitter against the Commodores, while Zeke Dodson and Cade Sorrells combined for all five RBI. It was the first win for Lipscomb against Vanderbilt since 2015.

SCOUTING NJIT

The Highlanders (10-8) enter league play on a roll after winning 10 of their last 14 games, including a twinbill sweep on the road Sunday at Villanova.

David Marcano is the ASUN’s top hitter with a .419 batting average – 30 points higher than USC Upstate’s Charlie Carpenter. He has 28 hits in 62 at-bats.

Michael Anastasia has two of NJIT’s four home runs. He is tied with Evan Pietronico for the team lead in RBI with 11.

The Highlanders pitching staff ranks second in the ASUN with a .238 batting average against, to go along with a 4.21 ERA. They have 92 strikeouts and 70 walks in 145.1 innings of work.

Tyler Stafflinger has started four games on the hill and leads the rotation with a 3-1 ledger and a 2.55 ERA. Johnny Malatesta has recorded three of the team’s four saves.

AROUND THE HORN

  • With a 2-for-2 night on Tuesday, Dodson upped his batting average to .379 – which is third best in the league. He paces the team with three home runs, 19 RBI, six doubles, two triples, a .598 slugging percentage and a .442 on-base clip.
  • Sorrells notched his first career triple against Vandy. He has reached base in all but one game this season behind a team-high 21 walks. His 12 RBI are third on the Bisons.
  • Blake Thomas leads the ASUN with 12 stolen bases on 12 attempts. His 17 walks only trail Sorrells on the team.
  • Jeffrey Crisan is second on the squad batting a cool .328 with 16 RBI.
  • Noah Thompson leads Lipscomb’s weekend rotation with a 3-1 record and a 2.08 ERA. The freshman southpaw has allowed only six earned runs in 26.0 innings.
  • Chris Kachmar tops the Bisons and ranks sixth in the ASUN with 40 strikeouts.
  • Kyle Kemp got the start for Lipscomb on Tuesday even though he has been the primary closer this season. He paces the team with four saves in nine appearances.
  • Robbie Knox continues to be stellar out of the bullpen. The junior transfer leads the team with a 1.33 ERA. He also has three saves.
