Baseball hosts FGCU with ASUN Championship seeding on the line

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb baseball team is set to host its final regular season games this weekend when Florida Gulf Coast invades Music City for a three-game set at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. The series will help decide who gets in as the final two seeds of next week’s ASUN Championship.

The series is scheduled to begin with a 6 p.m. first pitch Thursday night. Friday’s matchup will start at 6 p.m., while the series finale on Saturday will get under way at 1 p.m.

FGCU (31-19, 7-11 ASUN) leads the all-time series 21-16 with Lipscomb (21-27, 7-11) entering the weekend’s action. The Bisons have lost seven in a row to the Eagles, including a three-game sweep in 2017. Prior to the skid, the Bisons had won six consecutive series against FGCU.

All three games will have live stats and are slated to air on ESPN+ with Jonathan and Justin Seamon on the call.

The Eagles come to Nashville riding a seven-game losing streak, including series sweeps at home to North Florida and #20 Stetson.

Despite its recent struggles, FGCU continues to lead the ASUN in homers (40) and RBI (278). Kohl Gilmore (10) and Richie Garcia (7) have combined for the most homers by any ASUN duo this season.

FGCU's 12 road wins is tied for the third most in the. They are averaging 6.5 runs per game on the road, while hitting .284 as a club in road outings.

Josh Dye continued his excellent season with another outing of 7.0 innings last weekend. He now has pitched 6.0 innings or more in 11 of his 13 starts this season. His 2.55 ERA ranks fifth in the ASUN.

Sophomore Marc Coffers has been a speed demon on the base paths. He leads the team and the ASUN with 20 stolen bases, which is only five shy of FGCU's single-season program record.  Lipscomb’s Blake Thomas is second in the conference with 17.

Mario Leon pitched 6.0 quality innings last time out for the Eagles. He now has pitched 79.0 innings this year, setting a new single-season career-high mark for innings pitched. His 2.73 ERA ranks 10th in the ASUN.

  • Seventeen of Lipscomb's 21 wins have come at home.
  • The Bisons continued to show off their power with three more homers in the series at North Florida.
  • Lee Solomon connected on two long balls in one game as the senior now has five on the season, second-most on the team.
  • Zeke Dodson had two hits last weekend to bring his season total to a team-best 50. It marks the third-straight season that the third basemen has collected 50 or more hits in a season for the Bisons.
  • Lipscomb leads the ASUN in sacrifice flies as we enter the final weekend of the regular season. The Bisons have 23 sacrifice flies on the season, with Dodson accounting for a team-best eight of those.
  • Freshman Noah Thompson has been in the weekend rotation for the Bisons and holds the lowest ERA among ASUN Freshman at 3.33. He pitched at least 6.0 innings for the fifth time this season last weekend.
  • Junior Kyle Kemp boasts the best K/9 ratio on the team at 11.00. He struck out seven batters in only 4.0 innings of work last week.
  • Chris Kachmar has the team lead in strikeouts at 64 entering this week.

The ASUN Championship is next week at North Florida’s Harmon Stadium. The tournament will run from May 23 – May 26 with the top six teams from the league. The Bisons are tied with FGCU and NJIT for fifth. They need to win two games against the Eagles or have some help from UNF in order to get into the field.
