NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb baseball team completed the series sweep of ASUN foe Kennesaw State with a 13-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Dugan Field.
“We played right with the game plan,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. “Other than getting in a few jams early, that we were able to get out of, we were able to get the momentum and keep it, which was huge. Once we got the momentum it kind of just spread.”
The Bisons (14-12, 3-3 ASUN) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and were in control for the rest of the game to secure their first sweep of an opponent this season.
Chris Bashlor started the bottom of the second inning with a leadoff walk and was able to advance to third on a single by Cade Sorrells. Ty Jones brought Bashlor home with a sacrifice fly for the first run of the game.
Lipscomb continued to get guys on base with back-to-back singles from Chaz Bertolani and Brian Moore to load the bases. Maddux Houghton stepped up to the plate and reached on a fielders choice, which allowed Sorrells to come home. Bertolani scored on a wild pitch and Haddon Adams recorded a RBI single back up the middle to plate Houghton from second.
The Bisons continued their good start in the next inning with a solo shot over the wall from senior Zeke Dodson making it 5-0.
The Owls (15-14, 3-3 ASUN) put up their first run of the game in the top of the fifth. Daniel Seres crossed the plate after a bases loaded walk.
The Purple and Gold continued to roll through the middle innings posting four runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to make it a 12-1 ballgame.
Lipscomb tacked on its 13th run of the game in the eighth on an infield single by Moore to score David Graves, who had come on to pinch-hit earlier in the inning.
Senior Joshua Colon had a solid outing on the mound for the Bisons and picked up his first win of the season. Over five innings of work, Colon allowed six hits, one earned run and struck out four.
“I was thinking about this game all week,” Colon said. “I just got prepared and we are getting back on track. I really like my role [on the team]. It’s an important role because the series is going to be tied or we could be going for the sweep. It’s really good to feel the support of the coaches putting me in that spot.”
