Bisons Fall To Belmont In Second Round Of Battle Of The Boulevard

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb baseball team fell to Belmont in the second installment of the Battle of the Boulevard 10-1 at Dugan Field on Tuesday night.

The Bisons (21-19, 5-7 ASUN) never seemed to have their stuff as they had to play catch-up from the very beginning.

The Bruins (20-20, 14-7 OVC) jumped out to take the early lead in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Devon Gardner to make it 1-0. Belmont then followed with two runs in the second inning on a RBI single by Zach Ehrhart and a RBI double by Chas Hadden to go up 3-0.

After a scoreless third inning, the Bruins plated their fourth run of the game on a wild pitch. It was in the sixth inning when Belmont took control of the game. The Bruins hung four runs on the scoreboard after they loaded the bases and scored on a hit by pitch, two-RBI single and another wild pitch.

The lone run for the Purple and Gold came in the bottom of the sixth as David Graves recorded an RBI on a fielders choice to bring in Chris Bashlor.

Belmont threatened to score more runs as it loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the seventh, but freshman Tyler Sills got Lipscomb out of the huge jam and did not allow a run and recorded two strikeouts.

The Bruins made up for leaving the bases loaded in the following inning and sealed the deal as Hunter Holland sent a two-run homer over the wall in left to make it 10-1 Belmont.

“We just didn’t capitalize on anything,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. “They outplayed us, they out hit us and they out pitched us. It was definitely their night. It was our night over there; it was their night over here. I’m not going to say that’s baseball; we’ve got to play better. We didn’t play very well tonight and they played really well and that’s usually the outcome, 10-1.”

AROUND THE HORN:

  • The Bisons totaled eight hits despite just the one run.
  • Lipscomb left nine runners on base and Belmont left on 10.
  • Tyler Guilfoil came out of the bullpen for 3.1 innings in relief and allowed four earned runs on two hits, walked two and struck out five.
  • Maddux Houghton stole the only base for the Bisons.
  • Six total batters were hit by a pitch during the game. Lipscomb plunked five Belmont batters and Belmont hit one Lipscomb batter.
  • Belmont used a total of 10 pitchers in the game.

UP NEXT:

The Bisons will continue their home stand with a conference series against Stetson April 26-28. The series will start at 6 p.m. on Friday.
